What Is Iron Fallout?

Iron fallout is exactly what it sounds like: tiny particles of iron and metallic debris that land on your car and become embedded in the paintwork over time.

It comes from a few main sources:

Brake dust is the biggest culprit. Every time any vehicle brakes near your car, hot metallic particles are shed from the brake discs and pads. These land on every surface around them — including your paintwork, wheels, and glass. Because they’re hot when they land, they fuse into the clear coat.

Industrial fallout is another major source, especially if you live near a railway line, industrial area, or motorway. Metal particles from train tracks and industrial processes settle out of the air and onto cars parked nearby.

Rail dust specifically affects anyone who commutes or parks near train lines. The particles are tiny, sharp, and penetrate the paint surface aggressively.

Why Regular Washing Doesn’t Remove It

The reason iron fallout is such a problem is that it doesn’t sit on top of the paint — it embeds into it. Shampoo and water can remove surface dirt, but they can’t pull out particles that are physically fused into the clear coat.

Over time, these particles oxidise (rust), which is what causes those tiny orange or brown specs you sometimes see on white or silver cars. Left unchecked, they can pit and permanently damage the paintwork.

What Does an Iron Remover Actually Do?

  3. Agitate lightly with a soft brush or mitt if there’s heavy contamination
  4. Rinse thoroughly with a pressure washer

Don’t let it dry on the surface. If it’s drying, rinse it off.
