Before You Start — Prep Is Everything
This is the part most people skip, and it’s the main reason ceramic sprays underperform or fail early. Applying ceramic protection over dirty, contaminated, or imperfect paint locks all of that in under the coating.
You need to start with genuinely clean paint:
- Snow foam or pre-wash to remove loose dirt
- Full shampoo wash using Gloss Bathe — the paint needs to be squeaky clean
- Iron decontamination with Bleeding Iron — iron fallout stops the coating bonding properly
- Clay bar treatment if the paint feels rough — it should be completely smooth before you apply anything
- Polish or correct the paint if there are swirl marks or light scratches — these will be visible under the coating
Once the paint is clean, decontaminated, and corrected, dry it thoroughly. The surface needs to be clean, dry, and free from any waxes or existing sealants.
Choose the Right Conditions
Ceramic sprays are sensitive to temperature, humidity, and sunlight. Ideal conditions are:
- Indoors or in the shade — direct sunlight causes the product to cure too fast
- 10–25°C — cold slows curing, heat speeds it up too much
- Low humidity — avoid applying in damp or humid conditions
A garage is ideal. If you’re outside, pick a cool, overcast day and work in the morning or evening.

Work one panel at a time. Don’t try to do the whole car in one go.

- Work it into the panel using overlapping straight passes — keep the layer thin and even
- Leave it to flash — this takes about 1–3 minutes in normal conditions. The product will go slightly hazy or streaky when it’s ready to remove
- Buff off with a clean, dry microfibre cloth using light pressure. Flip the cloth frequently to a clean side
- Inspect the panel under a light before moving on — any residue you miss will need buffing while it’s still pliable
Work systematically: roof, then bonnet, boot lid, wings, doors, front and rear bumpers.
The 24-Hour Rule
After application, keep the car dry for at least 24 hours while the coating finishes curing. No rain, no washing, no moisture. This is critical — disturbing the coating before it’s fully cured will compromise the bond.
After 24 hours the hydrophobic effect will be active and building. Full hardness develops over the following days.
Maintenance
A properly applied ceramic spray will last several months with normal washing. To maintain the protection:
- Wash regularly with a pH-neutral shampoo like Gloss Bathe — acidic or alkaline products will degrade the coating faster
- Top up every few months with another light application of The One
